5 famous ‘facts’ about the Fourth of July that aren’t true – and what actually happened instead

The Fourth of July is a big deal in the US. It marks the 13 colonies’ declaration of independence from Britain and King George III. There are a number of popular historical tales out there about the US’s Independence Day. Here are a few that are untrue or impossible to actually verify:

#1 – The founding fathers signed the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776

On a hot summer day in Philadelphia, the Continental Congress declared the 13 colonies independent from the Crown. Massachusetts delegate and future US president John Adams was certain that he’d witnessed history — and that the date would live on in memory.

“The Second Day of July 1776, will be the most memorable Epocha, in the History of America,” wrote Adams, in a July 3, 1776 letter to his wife, Abigail. Poor Adams. He was only off by two days. The Continental Congress actually issued an initial resolution asserting independence from Britain on July 2, which was then revised and finalized on July 4.

However, historians believe that the signing didn’t take place until about a month later. Emily Sneff, research manager of the Declaration Resources Project at Harvard University, writes that 49 of the 56 signers didn’t even add their signatures the declaration until August 2, 1776: “It took several months, if not years, for all of the signatures to be added.”

She cites the Journals of the Continental Congress, which include this August 2 entry: “The declaration of independence being engrossed and compared at the table was signed.”

So, why do we gather together to blow things up and grill meat on the Fourth? The Declaration was technically agreed to on that day, and the copies distributed throughout the colonies were dated July 4, 1776.

As a result, that was the date that stuck in people’s minds.

#2 – The Revolutionary War was all about the American colonies and Britain

As any American student can tell you, Independence Day in a nutshell was the rebellious, teen-aged colonies finally having it out with their overbearing mother country. And France helped, too.

It’s probably more helpful to look at the war through the lens of the power struggle between France and Britain. The American Revolution was, in many ways, more of an episode in their drama, as opposed to an earth-shaking event, in and of itself.

The American Revolution took place on the heels of the French and Indian War — one of the theaters of the Seven Years’ War between France and Britain. That North American clash provided a prelude to the Revolution, launching George Washington’s military career and prompting a victorious but cash-strapped Britain to raise taxes on its colonies. France’s eventual decision to dive into the fight on the side of the colonists was a chance for payback.

That being said, it’s understandable why the American Revolution is a bigger deal in the US than other countries— it is our history, after all. Plus, it’s probably fair to say that the rebellion, along with the spread of the Enlightenment, sparked future global changes, including the French Revolution.

#3 – The Liberty Bell cracked on Independence Day

The Declaration of Independence and the Liberty Bell are forever tied together in the popular imagination. As the lore goes, after the colonies declared independence, the citizens of Philadelphia partied so hard that they cracked the bell, which was first made in 1751.

While it’s a great story, this tale is total nonsense. First of all, the official announcement about the Declaration didn’t go out until July 8.

“On that day, lots of bells were rung to celebrate public readings of the Declaration, and the Liberty Bell was probably one of them,” writes historian Joseph Coohill — who blogs about historical myths under the name Professor Buzzkill.

We have no way of knowing for sure, though, since the state house steeple in which the bell was housed was kind of falling apart and under repair at the time, according to the Independence Hall Association.

#4 – John Hancock’s giant signature was meant to sass King George III

To paraphrase the old story, John Hancock made his mark on the Declaration with a large, flourishing signature. When asked why he had signed his name so large, Hancock quipped that he wanted King George III to be able to read it without his spectacles. This fun anecdote most likely isn’t true.

Sneff writes, “There is no contemporary evidence for what Hancock said as he signed, and at the very least, we know that the engrossed parchment was not sent to King George III.”

So why did Hancock, a wealthy merchant, accused smuggler, and president of the Second Continental Congress, leave such a large signature? Well, as president, Hancock would have likely signed the document first. Also, take a look at some of the other documents he signed during his tenure in the Continental Congress. Turns out, the man just had a large signature.

#5 – John Adams died on July 4 and gave Thomas Jefferson a shout out on his death bed

This story is certainly half true — Adams and Jefferson both died on July 4, 1826, 50 years after the events of 1776. They’re not the only presidents to undergo a major life event on July 4. James Monroe died on July 4, 1831, while Calvin Coolidge was born July 4, 1872.

According to the popular tale, on his death bed, Adams whispered, “Thomas Jefferson survives” before dying. Unbeknownst to him, Jefferson had passed away a few hours earlier. It’s impossible to confirm that Adams truly included Jefferson in his last words. Contemporary accounts of the former president’s death may have been embellished, as ” America’s Jubilee” author Andrew Burnstein wrote in History News Network.

It’s possible that Adams mentioned Jefferson, but it’s also possible that this story stems from wishful thinking on the part of observers, given the friendship, rivalry, and history between Adams and Jefferson. The two had first became fast friends while serving in Continental Congress together.

This connection endured, despite their political differences, with Adams writing to Jefferson that “… intimate Correspondence with you . . . is one of the most agreeable Events in my Life,” according to the official website of Monticello, Thomas Jefferson’s estate. They had a bitter falling out after campaigning against one another in the divisive election of 1800. They rekindled their correspondence after retiring, sending 158 letters to one another over the course of 14 years. There’s no evidence that Adams mentioned Jefferson, as National Geographic reported. It’s possible that Adams’ thoughts drifted back to his estranged friend or that summer in Philadelphia as he lay dying, but we’ll never know for sure.

  1. Very nice post. I just stumbled upon your blog and wanted to say that I have really enjoyed browsing your weblog posts. After all I will be subscribing for your feed and I’m hoping you write once more soon!

  2. Hi there, You’ve done an excellent job. I will definitely digg it and personally suggest to my friends. I’m confident they will be benefited from this web site.

  3. How’s it been?

I want to share some extremely important news that has been making its way around the internet relevant to our future well being.

We are on the horizon of a future of a one world cashless money society where they will mandate us to have an RFID chip placed in our body. This chip will hold all of our information and we will lose much more of our privacy because of the tracking power.

Even more of a concern, did you know that this was prophesied about two-thousand years ago by a very well known person named Jesus Christ? How could this be? Keep reading… This may be the most important thing you will ever read.

…”And he(the false prophet) makes everyone—small and great, rich and poor, free and slave—to receive a mark on his right hand or on his forehead, so that no one can buy or sell unless he has the mark: the beast’s name or the number of its name.

This calls for wisdom: Let the one who has understanding calculate the number of the beast, because it is the number of a person. Its number is 666″ (Revelation 13:16-18 CSB)…

Speaking of the final times, this could only be referring to a cashless society, which we have yet to see, but we are getting close to. How come? Otherwise we could still buy or sell without accepting the mark of the beast among each other if tangible money was still around. It logically deduces itself to this conclusion.

The mark of the beast can not be anything spiritual, because the word references two separate physical locations. If it were to be spiritual, it would just say in the forehead.

Here is where it really ties together. It is surprising how precise the scriptures are concerning this RFID microchip. Here are some notes from a person named Carl Sanders who worked with a crew of engineers to help invent this RFID microchip in the 1900’s.

Mr. Carl Sanders attended seventeen New World Order conferences with heads of state officials such as Henry Kissinger and Bob Gates of the CIA to talk about plans on how to bring about this one-world system. The US government commissioned Carl Sanders to design a microchip for identifying and controlling the peoples of the nations-a microchip that would be inserted under the skin with a hypodermic needle(a fast, convenient method that would be progressively received by the nations).

Carl Sanders, along with a team of engineers behind him, with US grant monies provided by tax dollars, took on this assignment and produced a chip that is powered by a lithium battery, rechargeable with the aid of the temperature fluctuations in our skin. With out having knowledge of the holy Bible (Sanders was not a follower of Christ at the time), these men spent one and a half million dollars conduction research on the best and most convenient location to have the RFID microchip inserted below the skin.

Guess what? These researchers observed that the forehead and the back of the hand(the two spots Revelation says the mark will be received) aren’t only the most convenient locations, but are additionally the only viable locations for rapid, steady temperature changes in the skin to recharge the lithium battery. The RFID microchip is about seven millimeters in length, .75 millimeters in diameter, about the dimensions of a grain of rice. It’s capable of storing many pages of data you. All of your general history, work information, crime information, health records, and financial history could be saved on this microchip.

Carl Sanders believes that this RFID chip, which he remorsefully helped bring about, is the “beast’s mark” spoken about in Revelation 13:16-18. The original Greek word for “mark” is “charagma,” which means a “scratch or etching.” It is also interesting to notice that the number 666 is a word in the original Greek language. This word being “chi xi stigma,” with the final part, “stigma,” also meaning “to stick or prick. Mr. Sanders believes that is referencing to the use of a hypodermic needle being poked in the human flesh to insert the RFID microchip.”

Mr. Sanders asked a doctor what would take place if the lithium contained in the microchip was exposed in the human body. The doctor replied by saying a terrible sore would show up in that location. Here is what the scriptures of Revelation 16:2 has to say:

“And the first went and poured out his bowl on the earth; and there came an evil and grievous sore upon the men that had the mark of the beast, and those who worshipped its image” (Revelation 16:2 DARBY).

The Bible tells us we cannot buy or sell without receiving the mark, or the number of its name. This number of the beast being 666. The scriptures tell us to count the number 666. How do we calculate 666?

This is where it becomes an eye opener. Counting the number 666 has been long debated throughout the centuries, but has finally been made known in these final times by the Holy Spirit. What you will read confirms itself with the word of God the true interpretation to count six-six-six.

Throughout the scriptures, God uses the number 3 for confirming things. Below are a some examples:

“For there are three that bear witness in heaven: the Father, the Word, and the Holy Spirit; and these three are one” (1 John 5:7 NKJV).

“and that He was buried, and that He rose again the third day according to the Scriptures” (1 Corinthians 15:4 NKJV).

“…Holy, holy, holy, Lord God Almighty, Who was and is and is to come!” (Revelation 4:8 NKJV).

What is interesting is the the mark of the beast is revealed in detail in 3 different verses (Revelation 13:16,17,18), and each verse lists three different examples of the given subject. The last 3 being the number six used three times in a row. Here is a key point to unlocking how to count the number 666.

What does it mean to calculate the number of the beast, 666? It means to add up. How may we add up 666? Recall back to my previous key point regarding God confirming in 3’s. Now logically, what would be the most sensible way to count the number 666? To count it equally in threes based off the number. It is not reasonable to count it equally as 600+60+6, this would also revert us back to the start. We are not able to add it as 600+600+600, or 60+60+60, because there are no zeroes in between or at the end of 666. The only sensible option is 6+6+6=18. What is interesting is that the verse that tells us to count the number itself is verse 18, being the third verse out of three verses that describe the mark. Now what is 18 divided by 3? 6. So 3×6=18, or 6+6+6=18.

Another interesting point is that the two other possible combinations (making a total of three possible combinations) for moving the plus symbol in between the sixes are 66+6=72, and 6+66=72. Count up both 72’s together and you get 144. Why the number 144 is interesting is because the verse following Revelation 13:18 is the first time in God’s word where the 144,000 are being mentioned in detail:

“Then I looked, and behold, a Lamb standing on Mount Zion, and with Him one hundred and forty-four thousand, having His Father’s name written on their foreheads…” (Revelation 14:1).

If we add up all 3 numbers by counting 666 by moving the plus symbol around in all 3 possible combinations, we would get 72+72+18=162. What is fascinating concerning the number 162, is, if you divide 144,000 by 162, you get 888. The name for Jesus in Greek gematria adds up to 888. The New Testament was originally written in the Greek language. Revelation 14:1 not only mentions the 144,000, but also the Lamb who is Jesus.

Now what is interesting concerning the number for Jesus, 888, is that if you apply this same formula, you get 8+8+8=24. Why the number 24? Revelation chapter 4 tells us there are 24 elders seated around the throne of God. This is the same throne where Jesus sits:

“Immediately I was in the Spirit; and behold, a throne set in heaven, and One sat on the throne. And He who sat there was like a jasper and a sardius stone in appearance; and there was a rainbow around the throne, in appearance like an emerald. Around the throne were twenty-four thrones, and on the thrones I saw twenty-four elders sitting, clothed in white robes; and they had crowns of gold on their heads” (Revelation 4:2-4).

Now if you take 8+8+8=24, and 8+88=96, and 88+8=96, you get 24+96+96=216. Take 144,000 divided by 216 and you get 666. Don’t forget that this was the same formulation to get the numeral 162 out of counting 666 that brought about the number 888 when dividing 144,000 by 162. It is perpetual.

With utilizing the identical formulation of counting by adding the “+” symbol in between the numbers, why do all these numbers relate in such a manner?

Another fascinating factor to note is that if you add up all of the numbers from 1 to 36, it totals 666. The number 36, as in three sixes? Could this be a sign that we must add up three sixes rather than perceiving the number as six-hundred sixty six?

So what may this suggest? Well we know in this world we are identified by numbers in numerous forms. From our birth certificates to our social security card, as well as our drivers license, being identified based on a system of ruler ship. So it is plausible that this RFID microchip will contain a brand new identification that has a complete total of 18 characters.

Might this be the name of the beast, the number of its name? The one-world beast system that’s identified by 18 characters? This might fit the scriptures that speaks of a mark that we ought to have to buy or sell in our right hand or forehead, and that it also incorporates the number of the beast, in the course of a future cashless money society.

The Bible warns us in the end times that a false prophet will stand up performing miraculous signs to deceive many to obtain the mark of the beast:

“Then the beast was captured, and with him the false prophet who worked signs in his presence, by which he deceived those who received the mark of the beast and those who worshiped his image” (Revelation 19:20).

Whatever it takes, DO NOT RECEIVE IT!

“Then a third angel followed them, saying with a loud voice, “If anyone worships the beast and his image, and receives his mark on his forehead or on his hand, he himself shall also drink of the wine of the wrath of God, which is poured out full strength into the cup of His indignation. He shall be tormented with fire and brimstone in the presence of the holy angels and in the presence of the Lamb. And the smoke of their torment ascends forever and ever; and they have no rest day or night, who worship the beast and his image, and whoever receives the mark of his name” (Revelation 14:9-11).

We are dwelling in very prophetic times with very important Biblical prophecies coming to pass. When Donald Trump recognized Jerusalem as capital of Israel in December of 2017, this was a massive step to bring about the Third Temple prophesied in the Holy Bible.

God’s holy Word’s tells us that the Antichrist will seat himself in this temple:

“…and the man of sin is revealed, the son of perdition, who opposes and exalts himself above all that is called God or that is worshiped, so that he sits as God in the temple of God, showing himself that he is God” (2 Thessalonians 2:3-4).

Within the Islamic faith, they have a figure referred to as the Mahdi, known as their messiah who they are eagerly waiting to appear. There are many testimonies from individuals on line who consider this man will be Barack Obama who may be the biblical Antichrist. I personally have had unusual dreams about Barack. He got on stage declaring himself to be a Christian with no affiliation to the Muslim religion, however it was later revealed by his own family members that he indeed is a faithful Muslim.

His actual name is said to be Barry Soetoro, and he had his name changed to Barack Obama. Is there any significance to this?

Jesus says, “And He said to them, ‘I saw Satan fall like lightning from heaven'” (Luke 10:18).

In Hebrew, the name “Barack” means “lighting”, and the use of “Bama” (Strongs Hebrew phrase 1116) is used to refer to the “heights” of heaven.

The following day after the election of Barack Obama (11/04/08), the winning pick 3 lotto numbers in Illinois (Obama’s domestic state) for 11/5/08 were 666.

Obama had been U.S. senator for the state of Illinois, and his zip code was 60606.

Regardless, whomsoever seats themselves in the Third Temple that is to be built in Jerusalem, declaring themselves to be God WILL BE THE ANTICHRIST. NEVER FORGET.

So, why do we need Jesus?

“for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God” (Romans 2:23).

“For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord” (Romans 6:23).

Our own works can’t save our souls from the wrong we’ve committed. If we step in front of a judge in the court of law, being responsible of a crime, the judge won’t judge us by the good that we’ve done, but rather the crimes we’ve committed. If we as fallen humanity, created in God’s image, pose this kind of justice, how much greater a perfect, righteous, and Holy God?

God has introduced to us His ethical law’s by way of the ten commandments handed to Moses at Mt. Siani. These legal guidelines were not given so we may be justified, however so that we may see the need for a savior. They are the mirror of God’s character of what He has put in each and every one of us, with our conscious bearing witness that we all know that it’s an offense to steal, lie, dishonor our parents, and so forth.

We can strive to follow all the ethical guidelines of the 10 commandments, however we’ll never catch up to them to be justified before a Holy God. The same word of the law given to Moses manifested as flesh over 2000 years ago in the body of Jesus Christ. He was brought forth to be our justification by perfectly fulfilling the commandments of God, living a sinless life that solely God may fulfill.

The gap between us and the law can in no way be reconciled by our own merit, but the arm of Jesus is stretched out by the grace and mercy of God. And if we’re to grab on, through faith in Him, He’ll pull us up being the one to justify us. As in the court of law, if somebody steps in and pays your debt, even though you’re guilty, the judge can do what’s legal and just and let you go free. This is what Jesus did nearly 2000 years in the past on the cross. It was a legal transaction being fulfilled inside the spiritual realm by the shedding of His blood, with His last words being, “…It is finished!…” (John 19:30).

So why did Jesus have to die for us?

Because God is Holy and just, the wrath that we deserve could not be overlooked. Through the perfect righteousness and justice of God’s character, it ought to be reconciled, it ought to be quenched and satisfied.

For God takes no pleasure in the dying of the wicked (Ezekiel 18:23). This is why in Isaiah chapter 53, the place it speaks of the coming Messiah and His soul being a sacrifice for our sins, why it says it pleased God to crush His only begotten Son.

This is due to the fact the wrath that we deserve was justified by being poured out upon His Son. For if it were to be poured out on us who’ve earned it, we’d all die and go to hell. God created a means of escape by pouring it out on His Son who’s soul could not be left in Hades, however was raised and seated at the right hand of God in power.

So now after we put on the Lord Jesus Christ (Romans 13:14), God no longer see’s the man or woman who deserves His wrath, but now the glorious image of His perfect Son residing in us, justifying us as if we obtained the wrath we deserve, making a way of escape from the curse of death.

Now what we ought to do is turn from our sins and trust in the saviour, confessing and turning from our sins. This is not just a head knowledge of believing in Jesus, howeverrather receiving His words, taking them to heart. Where we no longer live to practice sin, but turn from our sins and practice righteousness:

“Do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived. Neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor homosexuals, nor sodomites, nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners will inherit the kingdom of God. And such were some of you. But you were washed, but you were sanctified, but you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus and by the Spirit of our God” (1 Corinthians 6:9-11).

By doing so we may become transformed into the image of God through faith in His Son Christ Jesus Who is willing to give the Holy Spirit to whoever ask of Him:

“Most assuredly, I(Jesus) say to you, unless one is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God. That which is born of the flesh is flesh, and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit. Do not marvel that I said to you, ‘You must be born again.’ (John 3:5-6).

“But you are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if indeed the Spirit of God dwells in you. Now if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he is not His” (Romans 8:9).

What are you waiting for? Our Father in heaven only desires the best for us all, restoring all the pieces this world has stolen from us. That is what it means to be “holy”. To be made whole.

He’s waiting to hear from you. That God given tongue to speak language, through faith, pray to Him, ask Him to forgive you by confessing to Him your sins and be willing to forsake them; that you receive the sacrifice of His Son Jesus on the cross, and that you want His Holy Spirit residing inside you transforming you into a child of the living God.

Jesus says, “but whoever drinks of the water that I shall give him(the Holy Spirit) will never thirst. But the water that I shall give him will become in him a fountain of water springing up into everlasting life.”

Did you realize that Jesus spoke more about hell than anyone else in God’s word, even more than He spoke about heaven?! For this very cause He came to die for us, to deliver us from this place that we deserve.

He describes hell as a real place where,

    “Their worm does not die
And the fire is not quenched” (Mark 9:44).

    And where,

“There will be weeping and gnashing of teeth…” (Luke 13:28).

Jesus tells us who to fear,

“And do not fear those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. But rather fear Him who is able to destroy both soul and body in hell” (Matthew 10:28).

“Now I saw a new heaven and a new earth, for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away. Also there was no more sea. Then I, John, saw the holy city, New Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband. And I heard a loud voice from heaven saying, ‘Behold, the tabernacle of God is with men, and He will dwell with them, and they shall be His people. God Himself will be with them and be their God. And God will wipe away every tear from their eyes; there shall be no more death, nor sorrow, nor crying. There shall be no more pain, for the former things have passed away.’

Then He who sat on the throne said, ‘Behold, I make all things new.’ And He said to me, ‘Write, for these words are true and faithful.’

And He said to me, ‘It is done! I am the Alpha and the Omega, the Beginning and the End. I will give of the fountain of the water of life freely to him who thirsts. He who overcomes shall inherit all things, and I will be his God and he shall be My son. But the cowardly, unbelieving, abominable, murderers, sexually immoral, sorcerers, idolaters, and all liars shall have their part in the lake which burns with fire and brimstone, which is the second death.'” (Revelation 21:1-8).

Out of all the world religions, how can we make certain the Bible has it all right? The scientific information has established and continues to support that the universe once had a beginning wherein space, time and matter had been created. Many know this as the big bang.

“The non-biblical religions tell us that god or god’s create within space and time that eternally exist. The Bible stands alone and says that time and space don’t exist until God creates the universe.” – Astronomer(Phd) Hugh Ross

The Bible not only got it right that space, time and matter all came into existence at the start of the universe, it additionally states in 7 different scriptures that the universe is in a continuous state of expansion thousands of years before scientists discovered these facts.

Did you already know that the actual Noah’s Ark was discovered in the place where the Bible instructed us it’d be with the correct dimensions? As well as proof for the destruction of the cities of Sodom & Gomorrah and the Exodus event of the Red Sea crossing?

The Bible is by far the most translated and studied historical book in the history of the world, full of predictive prophecies, matching what we discover within the book of nature. Wouldn’t you assume God’s word to be so?
